Parodentology
Parodontitis (which is commonly known as parodontose)
is an infectious disease ?1 in Germany. The disease mostly begins with
bleeding of the gums, and if no measures are taken, can eventually result
in tooth decay and even lead to tooth loss.
Plaque bacteria rapidly accrete on the surface
of the tooth and get deep under the gum which results in gum inflammation.
Besides, the so-called parodontal pockets occur.
In order to treat parodontose properly, a thorough
diagnostic investigation of the disease should be carried out. Initially,
in the course of the preliminary treatment carried out in my dentist
office, the degree of gum inflammation as well as the gap between the
tooth and the gum is diagnosed by means of clinical methods and x-raying.
After that the depth of parodontal pockets is
measured by means of special broaches.
The treatment of parodontose presupposes integrated
treatment of all parodontal diseases. A consistent disease-focused therapy
not only enables to slow down the development of the disease but also
to preserve the teeth healthy up to old age. Intensive mouth hygiene
before and after parodontal treatment is indispensable (see Prophylaxis).
